Housing transactions fell 1% in September: HMRC – Mortgage Strategy

Residential property transactions in the UK fell by 1% in September compared to the previous month, according to the latest figures from HMRC.

The department said affordability pressures and economic uncertainty continue to weigh on the housing market.

HMRC figures show there were 94,800 residential transactions on a seasonally adjusted basis during September, 4% fewer than in the same month last year.

On a non-seasonally adjusted basis, transactions decreased 5% year over year but increased 1% compared to August 2026.

Industry experts have warned that further weakness may lie ahead, with lower mortgage approvals, higher borrowing costs and affordability likely to impact completed sales in the coming months.
