The average fixed-rate mortgage rate rose again this week, despite promising signs of interest rate cuts from major lenders, according to Moneyfacts.
Moneyfacts’ latest rate watch found that the average two-year fixed rate is now 5.97%, up one basis point from 5.96% at the same point last week.
The cost of the typical five-year fix is now 5.99%, up 3 basis points from last week, but 1 basis point lower than the average of 6% recorded on October 5.
“Average mortgage interest rates have continued to rise weekly, but lenders appear to be taking a more measured approach to pricing than they did during the period of rapid interest rate adjustments in September,” said Caitlin Estell, personal finance analyst at Moneyfacts.
“Although a few lenders offered rate cuts this week, pricing activity remains mixed and with swap rates still volatile, it may be too early to tell if rates have peaked or there is more room to move.
“Some major brands moved to make changes to fixed rates this week, with Lloyds Bank cutting interest rates by up to 10 basis points and Halifax making some rate cuts of up to 10 basis points, but also withdrawing selected fixed rate and variable rate mortgages.”
Meanwhile, Santander cut fixed interest rates by up to 25 basis points and variable interest rates by up to 14 basis points.
