Propertymark CEO Nathan Emerson welcomed Housing Minister Angela Rayner’s speech today, which addressed the regulation of estate agents.
During her speech at the Labor Party conference in Liverpool, Rayner highlighted that some estate agents, letting agents and property management agents are exploiting tenants and renters.
“A sector with many decent businesses, of course. But they are being undermined and undermined by too many cowboys, scammers and con artists. Homeowners, renters and renters are paying the price through hidden fees and traps,” she stated.
Rayner said she highlighted the problem during her time as an MP, but now under the new premiership she revealed she was “proud” to (address the problem) herself.
She addressed the audience: “Congress, we will legislate an independent regulation to control these cowboys. They will be required to follow the rules, and if they do not, their licenses will be revoked.”
In response to the Housing Secretary’s comments, Emerson welcomed the UK Government’s commitment to stronger regulation of estate agents.
“Professional estate agents are increasingly undermined by unqualified and inexperienced operators who do not adhere to the same professional standards,” he says.
“This is unfair to responsible businesses who invest in qualifications, training and compliance, and leaves consumers vulnerable to bad practices without adequate protection.”
“Building on the professional standards, structures and good practices already in place across the sector will be crucial to making this a success and ensuring the new system is consistently understood, enforced and adhered to.”
“Propertymark looks forward to working constructively with the UK Government to ensure regulation delivers higher standards, effective implementation and a truly professional property sector.”
