When I started working as a self-employed mortgage broker, my focus was simple: provide the best possible results for every client that walked through the door.
As demand grew, I ran into the classic dilemma that many brokers face. How do you scale an advice-based business without losing the personal touch, quality, or momentum that got you there in the first place?
Today, I’m proud to lead a team of 16 people – a mix of working professionals and freelancers.
Looking back on this journey, the most impactful driver of our growth has not been one technology tool or one marketing breakthrough. It was the strength of the ecosystem and support structure around us.
Team structure
Scaling your mortgage business is rarely a solo sport. For me, moving from a solo advisor to building a thriving business required the right overall partnership and a thoughtful approach to team structure.
Draw on the expertise of your network, foster real partnerships with lenders and service providers, and invest time in surrounding yourself with a great team.
First, having the support of a strong network was key. As an appointed representative of Stonebridge, we have benefited from an environment that allows us to focus on what we do best, which is advising clients and developing our consultants. We also have strong compliance, technology and business development support in our corner. A great network should not just be an organizational umbrella; It should serve as a catalyst for growth.
Secondly, building a mixed team of employed consultants and freelancers has enabled us to create a flexible and resilient business model. Job roles provide structured pathways for emerging talent, while freelance consultants bring a drive for entrepreneurship and independence.
Cultivating a supportive and collaborative culture across both sides of the business ensures everyone feels valued, equipped, and aligned to our shared standards.
Lenders and service providers
Most importantly, this growth would not be possible without the incredible support of our lenders and provider partners.
The relationship between growing mediation and BDMs is vital. When providers take the time to understand our business structure, communicate transparently, and support us in complex cases, it enables us to deliver better, faster results for clients.
Having the support of a strong network was key
For any broker sitting at a desk alone, wondering how to take the next step towards expansion, my advice is simple: look at your support structures. You don’t have to build everything from scratch. Draw on the expertise of your network, foster real partnerships with lenders and service providers, and invest time in surrounding yourself with a great team.
Growth isn’t just about writing more mortgages or insurance policies. It’s about building an environment where brokers, partners and clients succeed together.
